Interstate Safety

The goal of the Heads Up program is to keep everyone safe on our roads, especially those traveling on our freeways. If you step out of your car while on the interstate, even for a moment, you put yourself at risk of serious injury or death. It doesn’t matter if it’s a flat tire, running out of gas or getting into a crash, do not get out of your vehicle on the freeway. When in trouble, keep your seat belt fastened and leave the freeway at the next available exit. Then turn right and call 9-1-1. If you can’t reach an exit, pull over to the right shoulder. Stay in your car, call 9-1-1 and follow the instructions from dispatch.
